Advances in farming techniques have reached such an extent that it is now possible to grow plants without soil. Traditionally, plants used to absorb the nutrients they need from the soil in which they grow. What the plants need to grow are plant nutrients and if the nutrients are supplied to the plants in the required quantities, no doubt, the plants will grow. This is the principle behind hydroponics.

Hydroponics is a system of growing plants without soil. The essential plant nutrients are supplied to the plants in a liquid form. The roots absorb the nutrients and the plants grow like other normal plants. The nutrients are dissolved in water or some other solvent. How it is made available to the plant roots depends on the method of hydroponics you choose. In one method, the roots are immersed in the solution whereas in another method, the solution is sprayed onto the roots.

Special equipments and arrangements are needed for hydroponics. There has to a protected area like a greenhouse where the plants are taken care of. Pots are required to hold the solution and to keep the plant roots. A water tank and another tank to hold the liquid containing the nutrients are also needed. The pots are connected to the solution tank by way of small tubes. The tubes bring the liquid to the pots. There also has to be proper drainage systems to drain away the used water. Just last summer, I decided to have a greenhouse erected in my back yard and I have to say that, ever since I had this done, I have been very happy. I can get them from this guy for just 33 cents a piece, while at the market, I am paying nearly a dollar. I have seen him here for a year or two, and at one time he was selling strawberries too. I never knew at the time that he was growing them without all of the chemicals, and I assumed for sure that he was selling conventional berries. I am so happy to hear about this amazing source for fresh food. And the guy was so nice to me, and even invited me to check out the fish at his place too.
